And it all melted away by BeBurn And it all melted away by BeBurn
In 2010 I suffered a horrible injury to my left hand. I managed to sever the little and ring fingers and damage the middle and index fingers. To put me back together again a team of surgeons rebuilt my fingers over 4.5 hours and the wonderful people at the local hospitals hand therapy unit help me learn how to use it again.

I was promised no more than 70% movement back and around 50% sensation, they got the sensation bit right but we'll talk about that in a minute. Despite expectation I managed to gain around 95% movement back, I don't want to pin this to my determination or strength or any of that self promoted bullshit. I put it down to my legendary physiotherapist. She never let me stop trying nor did the most important woman in my life.

After my accident and surgery I was unable to function as an adult without help. The combination of nerve damage and the drugs I was on turned me into a useless lump for the first three weeks and I didn't make a full recovery for around 8-9 months. The one person who was there without being asked, who wanted to help me regain my dignity and self worth was my wife. I honestly do not believe I would have even bothered with the therapy if she was not a part of my life, but that's a story for another time maybe.

About the loss of feeling, well, I've tried to represent how much I can and can not feel with my left hand in this image. I've been told that sensation can return after several years but it is uncommon to regain full feeling. I'd say the Docs go it about right with 50%. The only thing I can compare it to would be like wearing a tight rubber glove and feeling through that. If you've made it all the way down here then thank you for taking the time to read.

If you would like to use this piece in any way please ask, I'm on most days at least once so you should get a quickish reply and if you have any words of advice do not hesitate the comment!

This is a great representation of your feelings, and lack of sensation in your hand, I think. It's apparent from the art that there's a lot under the surface here - and so it was neat to be able to read your story. I also think your words are such a great tribute to your wife for her love and support! I am touched to be able to read about your experience. Thank you for sharing!

I'm a little taken back I must say. Thank you very much for your kindness. Maybe I should let people know a bit more about the life of BeBurn, because on the other side of the screen I'm no where near as extrovert.
The tale of the knives and fingers is one not often spoken out loud in terms of my emotional state.

Anyway, before I get going again, Thank You.

Wow - now this is art with a story behind it!
I like how the fingers look like melting candles, it's a powerful representation of what happened to you.
The overall image is also quite striking, the background looks quite peaceful but it's obvious to see that, shall we say, something is not right.
Great job on the art, and much respect to you, your wife and of course the surgeons and your physiotherapist!

You are very kind SaxGirl, thank you for your thoughts. I'm not sure this is finished just yet, I want to make it 'darker' to really express where is was at the time. Again, thanks!
